No.29 [Online Discussion] The future of DX in the recycling sector and its potential

[Date & Time] Friday 29 October 2021, 14:00 ~ 17:00

[Summary]
As the risk of depletion of natural resources and environmental problems such as climate change and marine plastic pollution become more serious, there is a need to realize a circular economy, which reduces the disposal of recyclable resources and turns the economy around by recycling and utilizing limited resources. As for the recycling of natural resources, it is said that it is very difficult to ensure the quality and stable procurement of recycled resources.

In the recycling sector in Japan, the use of recycled materials is still at a low level due to reasons such as “the structure of the industry, which is dominated by small and medium-sized companies”, “dealing with products with low versatility”, and “passive response to business practices on the part of upstream dischargers such as construction and manufacturing companies and downstream material manufacturers”.

In order to solve this problem, first of all, it is necessary to visualize the quality and supply of recycled resources by DX, and to make it possible to buy and sell by sharing information transparently between suppliers and consumers.

In today’s lecture, the speaker will firstly summarize the digital transformation (DX) that is currently under consideration in the recycling field. In addition, the speaker would like to present some examples of ongoing projects and discuss the future of DX in the recycling field and its possibilities.
