No.30 Online Seminar “Japan’s cement technology for a recycling-oriented society and the future”, November 4, 2021

As a leading company in the cement industry, Taiheiyo Cement is engaged in business activities to protect people’s lives and support society. The company operates mainly in the cement business, but also in five other business areas, namely resources, environment, overseas business and construction materials, mainly in Japan and the Pacific Rim.

Cement is manufactured at a high temperature of 1450°C. The annual production volume of cement at our plants in Japan reaches 17.7 million tonnes, and the chemical composition of cement consists of calcium oxide, silicon dioxide, aluminium oxide and ferric oxide. This high production volume, the high temperature conditions and the fact that cement is composed of several chemical components, make it possible to use a large amount of different waste and by-products. In recent years, the company has been working on the development of circular economy and carbon recycling.

New developments in environmental activities include the development of carbon-recycling cement manufacturing process technology to achieve carbon neutrality, and the development of new recycling technology to support the Resource Combinat Concept, which aims to create value from unused resources through cross-sector collaboration with other industries. In response to social demands for longer service life and maintenance of social infrastructure, we have developed pore free concrete (PFC), the world’s strongest concrete, to extend the service life of concrete structures, and as a maintenance technology, we have developed Wireless Monitoring System (WIMO), a non-contact, non-destructive detection system that uses RFID wireless technology to detect strain and steel corrosion in structures. In this presentation, we will introduce the above approach.
